Commodity Juicery

[02/05/2016] A couple of weeks ago, I was invited by Zomato to a private tasting session at Commodity Juicery. That night, I brought my health-enthusiast friend Naomi along with me to try out a sample of some of their juices and snacks.

Disclaimer: Although everything was complementary, this review is 100% based on my personal opinions.

The Restaurant

Commodity Juicery is located on Fraser St.. I totally forgot to take a picture of the outside but even though it’s a small shop, it’s not difficult to find with its fresh white canopy.

The business was a project started up by a few entrepreneurs in August 2014, and I got the chance to speak with one of the founders of Commodity Juicery, Carissa, who guided us through the tasting session. She was so down-to-earth and answered lots of our inquiries about their food, business and health in general.

The interior was very simple and vibrant, with pops of colours amid the white background. As a juice bar, it doesn’t accommodate too many customers. There’s a high bar table setting right in front of the kitchen and in the corner is a lounge area with two seats and a coffee table with stacks of magazines.

The Food

Commodity Juicery not only offers a variety of juices, smoothies, shots, but also meals and snacks. Everything is vegan and made with wholesome, natural ingredients that are great for your health! If you’ve been following my Instagram and blog for a while, you probably know that I’m all about living a healthy lifestyle and achieving balance with mostly plant-based but sometimes indulgent foods. So, I fully support health businesses like Commodity Juicery!

They also offer a variety of cleanses- the descriptions of the types are available on their site! All their recipes are also approved by certified holistic nutritionists.

While we were waiting for the previous group to finish up their tasting session, we were offered some Zucchini Chips.

These were thin and crispy, making a healthy alternative to regular potato chips, with a “sour cream” flavour.

All Greens (#2)

Kale, Cucumber, Romaine, Celery, Parsley, Lime, Lemon, Ginger

Purple Puppy (#6)

Beet, Cucumber, Cilantro, Orange, Apple

Orange Roots (#8)

Carrot, Tumeric, Apple, Lemon

Sunrise (#10)

Grapefruit, Apple, Lemon, Mint

All the smoothies and juices have very unique flavour profiles, and they’re not like anything I’ve ever made at home. The smoothies are definitely great options for those who are new to healthy eating- they are all sweet and flavourful, and don’t taste very “healthy” at all. 😛 On the other hand, I love their different collections of juices. #1-4 are greens, #5-6 are beets, #7-8 are carrots, #9-10 are citruses, and #11-13 are mylks. Beet and carrot based juices are naturally sweeter, but my favourites out of all that I sampled would have to be the All Greens and Sunrise, which were both very refreshing.

We also got to try a fresh batch of their Matcha Mylk ($10)

Cashews, Almonds, Matcha, Maple Syrup, Vanilla Bean

img_9112This was so rich and creamy- the fat from the nuts really does compromise for the fats in regular milk! It’s lightly sweetened, but the matcha flavour really shines through.

Relief Shot

Lemon, Ginger

img_9122This. Was. Intense! I’m not a fan of ginger so I was not used to the spice, but Naomi downed it like a beast! My throat was burning for minutes after this shot, it was so spicy! I was surprised of the surge of energy I did get after drinking this, it was very energizing indeed.

Birdnest Cookies

Almonds, Coconut, Walnuts

img_9115This is actually a recipe in making, but we got to try it! Completely raw vegan, the texture resembles a soft cookie. It was quite sweet as well, with chewy bits of coconut. Very delicious!

Kale Caesar ($10)

Kale, Romaine, Coconut Bacon, Rawmesean, Cashew Caesar Dressing

img_9120A very close vegan version of caesar salad! The caesar dressing was on point- creaminess from the cashews, hints of savoury from the dulse flakes.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Naomi and I had a great experience here! It was so much fun sampling a variety of juices and now I found my favourites. Healthy, plant based eating may sound intimidating at first, but it’s actually not as difficult as you would think! Just because it’s healthy, doesn’t mean it can’t taste good. I recommend you to give juice bars like Commodity Juciery a try if you’re just getting started to the lifestyle. (: As for me, I would love to return in the future, perhaps even for a juice cleanse. 1. I’ve never been the biggest fan of juice bars because they’re a bit overpriced when you can make your own at home! But this place looks very beautiful, and I do love me a good carrot ginger and orange juice!

    • That’s true, but I don’t have a juicer and I’m too lazy to make my own juice hehe.. so it was nice trying all the different flavours!
