Kamamarui Ramen & Don

[07/29/15] Lately, lots of ramen restaurant have opened in Vancity, but there is one near my area that I never got around to trying… Kamamarui Ramen. My friend Tray really likes this place and always talks about it, so a couple of weeks ago, I decided to go there for a quick lunch.

The Restaurant

There are many restaurants on Kingsway but Kamamarui Ramen is tucked away off onto Royal Oak Ave. It would be hard to spot unless you planned to go there.

IMG_8371It’s a small shop, consisting of no more than 10 tables and a communal table by the sushi bar.

I love the wooden furnishing, which gives the shop a clean, polished look.

The Food

Kamamarui Ramen’s menu is kept simple and posted on the wall. Other than ramen, they also have some appetizers, tempura, donburi, or meal combos with them. As usual, you can choose to add on different toppings to your ramen.

On the table, you can find an assortment of sauces to add to your broth if you’d like- spicy sauce, chili oil, and ramen sauce. The ramen sauce is savoury, while and the spicy sauce is peppery.

I decided to get Combo #1, which comes with a bowl of ramen and their “bombs” for $1.50 more. I think their combos have great value because with the amount you get, you can easily share it with someone else. I ended up packing almost half of my meal to go!

Vege Ramen– $8.50 (4/5)

miso soup base seasoned with miso flavour green onions, bean sprouts and corn

The ramen came in a large bowl, garnished with a piece of seaweed. The portion was generous, with lots of noodles and veggies! The ramen noodles had the perfect bouncy texture, and it soaks up all of the miso broth, which is light and savoury, but still well seasoned.

Bombs– $1.50 with combo (4.5/5)

seasoned seaweed with rice, teriyaki sauce

The bombs are Kamamarui’s specialty nigiri, and they’re essentially rice balls with sesasonings. These were so delicious! I love the sweet and savoury flavours and the rice also has a nice chewy texture, like sushi rice.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I loved my meal at Kamamarui Ramen! The food is great and it is actually not as costly as other ramen places. Service was friendly as well, and I was surprised how quickly my order came.
