Burgoo (Main St.)

[12/05/2014] Burgoo has been on top of my list for a while now, I just love their concept of comfort food around the world! After a pretty hectic week of school last week, I thought it would be appropriate to finally wind down and enjoy a simple, comforting meal.

The Restaurant

Burgoo is a restaurant chain with four locations- Point Grey, North Vancouver, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant. The one I went to was in the Mount Pleasant area, on Main St.

I love the cozy feel of the place! It kind of reminds me of a cottage.. The restaurant itself is pretty small, but they have a patio extension as well. When we got here at 6pm, the place was already packed with people. Mama Rae dropped me off to get a seat while she looked for a place to park and man, that timing. I literally got the last available table.. everyone else that came after had to be placed on a waiting list! o:
Christmas decorations always get me super festive and happy. C:

The Food

Butternut Squash Soup, CAN ($7): This soup tasted heavenly, just as expected because their soups seem pretty popular. Now, I was a little reluctant to order this particular one at first because it contained maple syrup and I’m very picky when it comes to sweetness, but I was craving some squash (and I never actually tried butternut squash before!). Turns out, there was only a subtle hint of sweetness, and that complemented the flavour of the butternut squash. The consistency was great- creamy but still light, and not thick and gloppy. I liked the extra crunch of toasted hazelnuts as well. There was a slice of baguette that came with this too, but I didn’t eat it. 😛 (5/5)

Kentucky Burgoo, KY ($17): I was torn between the Ratatouille Provençale and Kentucky Burgoo, but I settled with the burgoo because well, that’s what the place is called (and I already had French food at Les Faux Bourgeoise not long ago. :P). This has slow cooked lamb, beef, lima beans, corn, okra.. I couldn’t find any of the smoked ham that was mentioned in the menu description.. but the lamb and beef were very tender and flavourful. I would recommend getting one of their sides (rice, quinoa, etc.) to go along with this dish since it’s very saucy and tomatoey, unless you like that bold acidic taste. It was a bit too strong for me so I later added some Burgoo biscuits. Unfortunately, they were so busy that they forgot to put in my order.. so I just went without. Mama Rae found this a bit too sour from the tomatoes too, wanting to eat it with some rice, but she ended up chowing down most of the food just by itself anyways. xD (4/5)

Final Thoughts

Burgoo is Mama Rae’s favourite out of the restaurants we’ve been to so far, and I love this place just as much. The staff there were friendly, some points off though because they forgot my biscuits.. D: Nonetheless, I’ll definitely return for more delicious soups and other unique dishes offered on their menu. Crossing my fingers that I’ll be able to snatch a spot next time too!
